It's a December's day and the walk along the Spree continues where it halted in August into Treptow. The day is cold but without snowfall, yet the humidity in the air is high enough to be felt through the skin. Yet the birds quietly swim in the river. As for the Berlin people, they sell food along the river from their restaurants and have a peaceful stroll along the promenade.

This place is a green area that has remained free from the expansion of the tall buildings of the city, however, there is an uneasy feeling in this area. The photographer turned off the river path and headed South to which he found himself in front of a large entrance gate on which the phrase "Glory to our heroes" could be read out. As the photographer entered the war memorial the atmosphere changed. The German language around him turned into Russian and the temperature dropped low enough for the flowers that had been placed in front of statues to form ice on the surface. This memorial was built in 1949 to commemorate the Russian soldiers who fell in Berlin during the second world war. 5000 of these soldiers lay buried in the ground here.

South of the memorial is an artificial pond. The pond was opened in 1888 and in 1896 a so-called "ethnological exhibition" was held here where they displayed African people in a village similar to a zoo.ref It is said that the lake is called "Carp Pond" (Karpfenteich) in German because the restaurants along the water threw in fish that lived in the pond. Sadly, in 2009, the water froze over and the fish died.

The photographer continued from the pond into the woods. On the ground were small mushrooms and spider webs were frozen to ice. In the forest was also an abandoned amusement park, however, the fence was so overgrown that it is hard to see in. Furthermore, in a mysterious way, ivy also covered the trees.

After that the photographer returned on the river walk. Next to the road was an island, and on that island a woman and a girl wrote notes which they then let dance down into the river. If those were wishes or not is hard to tell. As the photographer continued down the river and enjoyed the scenery he heard music. Over in the water two "bathtub boats" came floating down the river. Alas, it is Berlin after all.
