Toji

Religious photography
published: 2026-01-07

The following snapshots were taken on an ordinary Friday at Toji (Temple). The temple was founded in the year 769 during the Nara Period. Meanwhile the oldest known novel in the world is "The Tale of Genji" which was published around 1021 which means the temple was built before novels were around. However, for people who know little about Kyoto's history or religion, the temple is nothing more than a landmark in the scenery of the city. Therefore the following photos portray the calm atmosphere within the temple walls rather than the impressive architecture. These photos capture high school students on a school trip, the market that is held monthly, and gardeners who are clearing up weeds and trimming hedges.
