Stenshuvud

Forest photography published: 2025-02-26

This trip is to Stenshuvud in East Scania. The name means "Stone Head" and according to a tourist guide it is said to be named after a giant who lives in the mountain.ref The area became a national park in 1986.ref

Within the forest there is a car parking spot connected to the park. The beach here is also popular for swimming so people will park their car here and walk down to the beach by foot. Shortly after the photographer set foot here he was met by a wild growing orchid by the side of the road and above his head hung green unripe apples. The path leads to a meadow and then to the beach. On the meadow there are different insects and flowers, and if one has an interest in macro photography the journey could already stop here. Among the insects are an ant stuck in a web, hover-flies and small moths and among the flowers are sorrel (Rumex acetosa) and maiden pink (Dianthus deltoides).

East the ratio of sand in ground becomes higher and the sea can be heard. Here the sea breeze sways the flowers and bees are digging their nests into the sand. Further east the sea meets land and in between the forest/meadow and the beach the rocks are round. There are children playing on the beach and a curious little creek flows out of a nearby grove. The moss in the shade of the grove contains beetles and pill bugs.

North of the beach are the three tops of the mountain. The largest of these is the north top at 97 meters above sea level, and on a clear day you can see all the way to Blekinge (county) from here.ref This photo trip continues onto and over the south and north top and continues on the path north. This path leads through many different types of forest and on the way there is an encounter with a herd of cows. Eventually, north of the national park is the famous Kivik apple orchard. The east side of Scania is known for apples with this being Sweden's largest farmer of apples.ref

From here the session continues into the forest. The east side of the national park is all cliffs. Besides some who come to gaze upon the view from the white lighthouse, there are barely any people here. The cold sea wind holler above the rocks, with pools of water collected on the top of the rocks, and in between the cliffs plants have a hold. Oh, wouldn't it be wonderful to see the morning sunrise from here?

Lastly, the trip goes through "The Giants Gate." This is a place where the rocks separate and create a passage down to the water. It is said that the giant Sten (translated to rock/stone) lives here and the gate is the entrance to his garden.ref From there the sun sank down and the photo session came to an end for this time.
