It was the autumn of 2022. The trees had turned yellow and the sun was shining, which is a good day to explore the city with a camera at hand. The trip starts by a quiet playground next to some medieval ruins. The playground, which was surrounded by oak trees that reached for the sky, was sparsely littered with leaves that had fallen onto the ground. A squirrel climbed a tree nearby when it turned around and noticed the camera. Along the park trail were white mushrooms and yellow leaves had piled up beneath the trees on the side of the road in which there was also an abandoned bicycle.
The road leads from the park up to the engineering faculty of Lund University. Leaves were floating in the department's pond, and when the wind blew the leaves traversed across the water surface. The warm sunlight made the pond water appear deep blue, and in the autumn colors of the trees along the shore were emphasized.
West of the engineering faculty is the university library. The library walls are covered in climbing ivy. In autumn the wall changes colors from a dark green to a fire red which has made the library into a popular destination for sightseeing. On a sunny day like this, students like to sit on the steps outside the library or on the nearby park benches and eat lunch or study. Yet here, invisible to the naked eye unless looked at up-close, the park hosts tiny mushrooms on rocks and logs.
Following the road west from the library one would walk past a tall church before arriving at Lund central station. North of the library is the university hospital area, and next to the hospital, surrounded by a hedge, is a big graveyard. Its graves were decorated with different figures and flowers but not maintained all the same. In front of one grave were red live roses meanwhile another nearby grave's most immerse feature were flowers that had withered into husks. The middle of the graveyard is cut through by a road lined with trees and is commonly used by pedestrians on their commute. Here they have a moment to glance up into the vegetation and enjoy the view.
As a followup on the exploration, the second day was used to investigate the shooting circumstances for a few graveyard photographs. On the walk up towards the graveyard there was yet another squirrel, this one was burying nuts it seemed like. In contrast to the squirrel, rooks searched for food under a layer of fallen leaves. Once on location the lightning was investigated in comparison to the hour of the day and angles were compared in preparation for the next photographs.
Finally, on the third day large format photos were taken as the sun settled over the area. Below are the results.
The first time the tombstone entered the viewfinder there were three snails stuck near the top. The combination of snails that had climbed up and lichen made it stand out which is why this scenery was chosen. A lap around to the back and a squat revealed a perspective where the mostly overlooked tombstones lined up with the view and the background backlight filled the frame and made the dim area appear bright. The foreground consists of gray tombstones and a monotone tree matched with green grass and lush moss. The ground is sparsely scattered with red and brown leaves. The red leaves in the background were faded out by the backlight which helped to move focus on the subject. Furthermore the black bus stop in the background was also faded by the backlight. There is a willow tree on the left side that shoots up and out of frame, and its leaves then appear dangling down on the left side with a swaying motion from the wind. There are three tombstones in the picture. The tombstone next to the tree looks like a trunk which makes it hard to spot.
After one has passed through the dim vegetated parts and entered the spacious parts of the graveyard, one could hear the wind rustle from above. If one turned their head upwards the view would reveal a large oak tree that filled the field of view with leaves moving with the wind. The top of the oak's strong branches were covered in moss and the low sun reflected the trees bark in a golden glow which created contrast between the upper parts of the branches and the lower parts. Since this view could be gazed upon for a long time it was chosen for a large format photo.
And finally. In the south end of the graveyard is a tree lined road. The golden evening light accented the colors of the leaves beautifully. The leaves that had blown up on the road made it feel like autumn. Flies illuminated in the light and a blackbird sang behind the photographer as the camera was placed at the end of the road and the large format photo was taken. The result is an immensely large photo. The lined trees were reminiscent of street lights as the crown appeared to glow. From there the autumn exploration was set to an end and the photo album was concluded.
