Kamo River

Environmental photography published: 2023-11-08

There are two main rivers in Kyoto. On the East side the Kamo River flows while the Katsura River flows in the West. Among the two Kamo River is the famous. Kamo river flows from the mountain range in the North and if one followed the stream on a bicycle they would eventually find themselves in the mountain forest.

The water flows South into Kyoto and runs in a straight line next to Kawaramachi. Likely what people remember of this river is sitting next to the shore while eating from a lunch box. North of Kawaramachi where Kamo River and Takano River conjoin there is a park. People gather in the park and practice sports and instruments, enjoy picnics and play in the water.

Kites soar in the sky above and on a given opportunity they will dive down and snatch food from unsuspecting girls. A flock of black crows also gather in the park to eat leftover food, however, they have to be quick as kites will take food from other birds too.

South of Kyoto Station the river will start to twist and turn again and the atmosphere is more similar to a town. The inhabitants use this path when they want to take a walk and children alongside the cherry trees next to the river. Around here the highway and railway cross over the river. Under the bridge there are more children playing with the NTT communication tower standing in the background. Here Kamo River and Katsura River are only separated by 200-300 meters. In between the rivers is Nishitakase river which flows out into Kamo River before Kamo River flows out into Katsura River.
